| What is a dial-up connection? |
|
In the Internet world, there are two main types of Internet access connections: dial-up and dedicated. A dial-up connection uses a standard modem to let you "dial-up" to your ISP each time you want to connect to the Internet. At the conclusion of a session, you "disconnect" from the Internet. Dial-up connections are normally 1:1 (one connection per computer), typically over a standard analogue telephone line, and serve the purpose of providing "as needed" Internet access for surfing, email, file transfer, etc.
Dial-Up is the simplest way to get on the Internet, but does have enormous limitations.

| What is ADSL? |
|
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a fast-growing new technology that converts existing twisted-pair copper lines into high-speed, high-bandwidth digital lines.
Purpose
The main purpose of ADSL is to enable high-speed access to the Internet. This allows the end user to have fast access to streaming media, large websites, multiplayer gaming and a wide range of other Internet applications. ADSL will help a company deliver on the enormous benefits of telecommuting, simply because the high speed of ADSL will remove many of the practical obstacles to giving end users the feel and dynamics of access into a corporate network. It will be just as if they were sitting in the company's offices.
ADSL enables access to corporate networks for telecommuters, as well as exciting new interactive multimedia applications such as multiplayer gaming, video on demand and video catalogues.

| Internet phone calls |
|
| Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a fancy name for using your computer to make phone calls. It makes a lot of sense. After all, whether you use ADSL or dial-up, your internet connection uses the phone line to send data. Your phone line treats voice traffic and data traffic differently, though. The trick to VoIP is to send voice as data.
